Toshiba announces commitment to ANZRP national e-waste recycling arrangement

24 April 2012

Sydney, 24 APRIL, 2012: Global technology leader Toshiba Australia today announced its membership with the Australia and New Zealand Recycling Platform (ANZRP); Australia’s first industry-led national electronic waste collection and recycling program.

Regarded as the most environmentally sound initiative to confront the growing volume of television and computer waste being generated by Australian households, ANZRP will offer a free e-waste drop-off service for households and small businesses as well as collection events across the nation.

Toshiba Australia’s Managing Director Mr Mark Whittard commented, “Toshiba, together with other major brands, has invested a number of years to achieve this outstanding combined industry-led program under the umbrella of ANZRP. As a transparent member-based and driven organisation, ANZRP is the collective commitment of these industry-leading brands to achieve a permanent solution to Australia’s e-waste challenge and Toshiba sees this as a tremendously important step forward for the community, the country and the environment.”

ANZRP General Manager Carmel Dollisson said of the membership, “We are delighted to announce Toshiba’s commitment to join ANZRP this week. As an interim board member, Toshiba has been an integral part of ANZRP since its initial formation and joins other major IT and TV brands we have announced throughout the past few weeks. ANZRP now has significant momentum and we expect to announce more members in the very near future.”

Toshiba’s decision to be part of the early formation team, and now a subsequent founding member of ANZRP, is due to the program’s independence, not-for-profit status and outstanding management credibility. Toshiba and other ANZRP members will work cooperatively to achieve the targets set by Government to boost the recycling rate for televisions and computers from 17 per cent in 2010 to 80 per cent by 2020-21

“Driven by robust environmental criteria, ANZRP replicates a leading model informed by many years of practical experience from overseas including Europe, Japan, Canada and the US,” said Mr Mark Whittard. “We have chosen to focus on this community-friendly recycling service as it not only meets our liability under the Product Stewardship Act 2011, it also continues to support Toshiba’s leadership in environmental management ” concluded Whittard.
